The national flag of Barbados, popularly called 'The Broken Trident', has three equal vertical bands of ultramarine blue (hoist side), gold, and ultramarine blue with the head of a black trident centered on the gold band. The trident symbol was taken from Barbados' colonial coat of arms, where the trident of Poseidon is shown with Britannia holding a complete trident - head and staff. The Tridents's head was broken off from its staff and was placed on the flag to symbolize a break from Barbados' status as a British colony.
